My Favorite Books Read in 2020

Every year for the past few years, I've set a reading goal for myself. My 2020 goal was 30 books, and I read exactly 30 books! In the middle of the year, I hit a bit of a slump and didn't think I was going to meet my goal (which would have been totally fine, especially because nothing went as planned in 2020), but I got out of it and got back on track.

I read mostly YA, and a lot of great new YA books came out last year. I really enjoyed a lot of the books I read last year ― more than usual ― so I wanted to share my favorite new reads (I had two rereads last year) and what I enjoyed about them!

Usually I buy the books I read, but 2020 was the first year where most of the books I read were from the library, saving me a lot of money. (Full disclosure: I work at a library, so I am a bit biased, but libraries are underrated, and people should use them more.) I loved a few of the books I borrowed from the library so much that I'm probably going to buy copies of my own in the future.

Break the Fall by Jennifer Iacopelli

Full disclosure here: Jennifer Iacopelli follows me on Twitter, but that 100 percent had no effect on how I felt about this book. As a gymnastics fan and avid reader, I will read pretty much any (young adult or adult) book where gymnastics is a major part of the story. So of course I read Break the Fall, and it's by far the best gymnastics book I've ever read.

Not only does it do a good job at addressing abuse and other problems rampant in the sport, which have been especially relevant and newsworthy for the past few years, but the writing about the sport and its skills is accurate. Though readers don't need to be big gym nerds like myself to understand, appreciate, or enjoy the story. The book tells the story of Audrey and her teammates on their journey to the Olympics and is overall inspiring and powerful.

Anna K. by Jenny Lee

This modern retelling of Anna Karenina instantly gave me Gossip Girl vibes but with a cast of diverse characters in a story and setting that's typically/traditionally white. With that said, there's absolutely no shortage of drama. There are quite a few characters to keep track of, but it isn't hard to keep up with all of them and their drama. Plus, it's one of those stories where everyone and everything is connected, which is quite satisfying. I haven't read the original Anna Karenina but think this is a great modern adaptation that will give you enough of the classic whether this makes you want to read the original.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki

I don't usually read graphic novels and have only read a few ever, but I got this one for Christmas in 2019, and it is a fantastic read. There's LGBTQ+ representation and Asian representation. It deals with the struggles that come with coming out, abuse, and relationships ― both platonic and romantic. I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it ended up being a pretty powerful read despite it being so quick.

2020 Golden Globes Fashion Favorites

This year was the first year I watched the Golden Globes and was actually looking forward to it and really excited about it. Usually, I watch kind of just because and to see all of the outfits, but this year, Taron Egerton (aka my fave, but you should know that by now) was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and won!!! While I love Taron, he did not make my fashion favorites from this year's Golden Globes. He still looked great, though! Here are the looks that did make it to my list of favorites:

Okay, but for real, I love this outfit. The navy sequin dress is amazing, and the color is so deep and rich. The sequins give it shine and dimension. I especially like the layered neckline because it adds more shape. The Tiffany jewelry is simple and elegant and goes with the gown perfectly. And the best part? The gown has pockets.

This pale pink Giambattista Valli gown is what ballerina princess dreams are made of! I obviously love the color and adore the ballerina vibes. There's a lot of tulle and layering but it doesn't look over the top, and the fluffy bodice creates a nice contrast in texture.

My Favorite Memories from 2019

2019 was a great year, definitely better than I ever would have expected or imagined. Some of my all-time favorite memories from my life so far happened last year. My best day ever happened in 2019, so it's honestly going to be hard to top 2019.

In 2019, I got to meet so many wonderful people. I got to see some amazing shows. I fell in love with the magic of live theater. I got a job that finally makes me feel needed, useful, and appreciated. I got to spend quality time with family for the first time in forever. I got to do new things and have new experiences and so much more. But here are my favorites from 2019:

Being a West Side Story Insider for Lyric Opera of Chicago

I wrote an entire blog post on my experience as a WSS Insider, so I won't go into too much detail about this, but it was truly a wonderful, amazing day and experience. In case you haven't read my blog post about this, I was chosen to attend the final dress rehearsal of Lyric Opera of Chicago's West Side Story and had the opportunity to live tweet the show and go on a backstage tour of the iconic Lyric Opera house at the start of May.

West Side Story has been one of my favorite movie musicals since I first watched it in high school, but I hadn't gotten the opportunity to watch a stage production until last year. Even though my first stage production of WSS was a dress rehearsal in which no one had to do the show full out, there was no evidence the cast wasn't performing at 100% (I saw the show a total of four times, so I'd know by now if someone was underperforming), and it was the best musical production I'd ever seen. Everything about the show was amazing, and what was even better was the opportunity to tweet all about it and then stand on such a big stage and see what it's like for the performers. Also, considering I've now been on Twitter for just about 10 years, being chosen to tweet a musical I love felt so cool, especially because there are very very very few opportunities to tweet in a theater!

My 19 Favorite Outfits from 2019

Happy New Year! I've been slacking on blog posts in the past few months, but I've found some time to do my annual yearly favorites posts. First up are my favorite outfits of 2019!

Picking my favorite outfits every year is never easy, but I feel like it was a little easier this year because for some reason, when I was going through all of my outfit pictures and my Instagram, it didn't feel like I had a lot to go through. Also, since I stopped doing so many outfit blog posts, I found doing this post more fun since a good portion of these outfits haven't been shared on here before.

I think this year may include the fewest amount of summer outfits and the most winter outfits since I started doing favorite outfits of the year posts, which is interesting since I usually like my summer outfits more. I guess that's what happens when you finally have jackets you really like and the weather isn't so terrible!

Wild Fable coat from Target | H&M floral top | Classic Navy Longchamp tote | Hot pink flats from Forever 21

My favorite thing about this outfit it just seems so perfect for early spring. The pink coat pops really well but also goes with the floral top and brings out the pinks there. My hot pink flats add another pop of color without feeling like it's too much or it doesn't fit. I also love how it feels girly and sophisticated, especially with the high ruffled neckline of the shirt and the little bow. Then the pink and florals just adds to that, of course.

This was an outfit I just came up with on a whim. It was one of those days where I wasn't sure of what to wear, so I just took a look in my closet and put something together. I ended up liking this outfit a lot more than I ever thought. The moto jacket plays off the floral design of the pants well to create a contrast in styles. The lace trim pink top adds some color and brings out some of the pink on the pants, too.

Fashion Friday: 2019 Emmys Purple Carpet Favorites

Awards season is starting to rev up, which means a lot of red carpet looks are coming our way. The 2019 Emmys did not disappoint with its regal purple carpet and outstanding ensembles. In fact, I had trouble narrowing my favorites down to under 20. But I did! And while I usually find only a few looks that stand out from the men, about a third of today's posts features some snazzy suits!

It's always nice when guys don't just wear a plain black suit or tuxedo to things, and this one is especially cool. The dark green color is rich, and the pattern of stars everywhere is subtle but provides great depth and adds a little fun to the serious piece. The velvet bow tie adds a luxurious vibe and nice contrast without diverting too much attention.

I've got to give props to this kid for wearing a sparkly sequin jacket, because at his age, it's not uncommon for kids to tease other kids, especially when they wear something that doesn't fit in with the typical idea of being a boy/girl. So be like Parker Bates and wear what you want regardless of what anyone else may think. This sequin jacket is awesome! And that little rose pin or whatever it is on the lapel is such a nice touch. He dresses better than a lot of people who are older than him.

My July Favorites

July was a more chill month for me, so I didn't discover too many new things. However, I added a bunch of new music to my current summer playlist and found my new favorite workout shorts!

Aerie Move High Waisted Bike Short - True Black

Bike shorts have been one of my favorite recent trends, and I've especially wanted ones to run in. I've gotten into a good rhythm with running this summer, but I've discovered that I don't like running in normal running shorts. Actually, I've discovered that I don't like running in non-high-waisted bottoms of any kind because they often just fall down at the top if they don't have a drawstring. And it's quite annoying to be pulling up your pants every minute while you're running.

So these Aerie bike shorts are great because they stay up and are nice and high-waisted. They don't budge when I run. They're super comfy and pretty durable and thick. These are a bit stretchy but not too much where it's like I'm running in compression shorts that move and bunch up at the leg whenever you move. I want like 10 more pairs of these for running and doing nothing at all.

"Something's Coming" from West Side Story - Aaron Tveit (The Radio in My Head)

I've actually known who Aaron Tveit is for probably like 10 years now since I know him and first watched him as Tripp van der Bilt on Gossip Girl. I didn't know he was a theater/Broadway actor for I don't even know how many years. But I found out he could sing and was on Broadway sometime in between him being on GG and him being cast in Grease Live, so I wasn't surprised or anything that he could sing. 

Anyway, because of the recent Broadway transfer of Moulin Rouge the Musical!, my interest in Tveit has piqued. So I've been watching a lot of videos of him on YouTube, watching and listening to all of this old content and music that I missed out on before. And if you know me, you'll know that West Side Story is one of my favorite ― actually, it is my favorite ― musical, and his cover of "Something's Coming" is one of the best I've ever heard.

Fashion Friday: My Favorite Avengers: Endgame Premiere Looks

Typically when it comes to Hollywood's best in fashion, people think of big awards shows like the Grammys, Oscars, or Emmys when a ton of the top celebrities in the world are all in one place dressed to the nines. But with a movie as big and star-studded as Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, I knew celebrities were going to slay the fashion game on the purple carpet. So in honor of the epic, long-awaited crossover event sequel, I'm sharing my favorite looks from the Endgame premiere.

Pictured on the right, Don Cheadle sported an awesome deep purple suit. I love how the material and the color work together to create differing shades of purple to really add some depth to the solid colored jacket and pants. Cheadle kept it simple with a black T-shirt underneath and some clean and crisp white sneakers, which add some contrast but still let the purple ensemble shine.

Fun fact: Donnelly is the only person featured in this blog post who hasn't worked on a Marvel movie. Anyway, this shiny sequin mermaid/unicorn-esque strapless high-low dress is so much fun and is a stunner. It's actually by my favorite bridal designers, Hayley Paige, and I just love everything about it. The big holographic sequins add so much flair and color. The high-low hemline added even more to the playfulness of the dress, and it's just so much fun (for the lack of a better word)! This dress is like the embodiment of a party.

World Book Day 2019: My Favorite Fiction Books

I've always liked to read. I've always seen reading as entertainment, something you do for fun. Even when I was a kid and my mom would make me check out books from the library that I had no interest in reading and even when I was in AP English classes and reading books seemed overwhelming, felt like too much, and wasn't always fun, I still wanted to read. I simply wanted to read what I wanted to.

And nine times out of 10, I want to read fiction. There's just something about being immersed in another world where anything can happen, even if that world is realistic fiction and just like the one we live in. Sometimes it's just nice to get out or your head and your problems with a good fiction book.

So in honor of World Book Day, I've decided to share four of my favorite fiction books, in no particular order. (And if you want to see more of my favorite books or what I'm reading, add me on Goodreads or follow me on Instagram and look at my books highlight!)

180 Seconds by Jessica Park

This is a book I got on Amazon kind of out of the blue. I think I might have gotten in on Prime Day. I'd never heard of it before but the story sounded interesting and young adult fiction is right up my alley and it was on sale, so I bought it. (Honestly, that's how I end up buying a lot of the books I own.)

180 Seconds is about a college student named Allison who doesn't like to keep people very close as she spent a lot of her life in foster care, going from one family to another. A junior in college, she has been adopted and legally has a dad (though she may not call him that), but doesn't really have anyone else in her life except her long distance BFF, Steffi, whom she knows from their time in foster care together. 

One day she's just strolling around campus and ends up in a social experiment where she's supposed to stare into a stranger's eyes for 180 seconds. She ends up really connecting with the guy whose eyes she stared into, and he basically changes her life ― but not in a "I found my soulmate and my life has been forever changed" sort of way. He helps her learn to trust and the importance of having people in your life whom you can count on. I do admit the staring into someone's eyes for 180 seconds thing is kind of weird, but I can definitely see how it could impact someone as long as it were the right someone. 

This became one of my favorite books, because it was one of the first books where I felt seen, where I really connected and related to the protagonist. There are a lot of times in this book where Allison feels alone and like she has no friends and is just anxious about the entire concept of basically having no friends despite being a junior in college, where everyone around her is surrounded by other people and making lifelong friends. She struggles to make friends, and I 100% related to all of that. I just graduated from college when I read this book, and college is when I realized and accepted that I didn't have a lot of friends and that making friends was something I struggled with, so reading this really affected me and made me cry a few times.

My March Favorites

Apparently last month was all about the "M's": March, music, magazines, and more. I discovered a lot of awesome new music last month that I've been listening to on repeat for nearly a whole month and got to read some great magazine features on a few of my favorite actors. In addition, there's typically some sort of new food or clothing item I try or wear for the first time, and that certainly applies here.

Sing to Me Instead EP - Ben Platt

Ben Platt's debut album was released just before the month ended, and I've been playing it nearly nonstop since. The first four songs he released were so beautiful and passionate that I knew I would enjoy the rest of them, and I do. From ballads about love and breakups to songs for and about his parents to a song about the wise words of an old man, there's a variety of content in the songs themselves while still telling an overall narrative. Plus, there isn't a single song I dislike.

My February Favorites

Being the shortest month of the year, it's not a surprise I didn't have much going on in and didn't discover a lot of new things I loved in February. But I did find a few, including some beautiful music, Target finds, and custom tech decor!

"Bad Habit" and "Ease My Mind" by Ben Platt

You may or may not recognize the name Ben Platt, but most people probably know him as one of two characters: Benjamin Applebaum from Pitch Perfect or Evan Hansen in the Tony Award-winning best musical Dear Evan Hansen. Either way, you probably know he's a great singer, but it wasn't until last month that I felt I truly got to hear him sing as he released his first two original songs from his upcoming album. "Bad Habit" and "Ease My Mind" are two of the most beautiful and vulnerable songs I've ever heard. Of course I enjoyed hearing him sing in Pitch Perfect and listening to him in the DEH cast recording, but I feel his original music does him more justice.

Fashion Friday: 2019 Oscars Fashion Favorites

While I didn't actually get to watch this year's Oscars last weekend because I was busy working, I did not miss out on all of the great red carpet fashion. (Thank you, Instagram!) This year's red carpet was a really good one, full of unforgettable looks, and a lot of pink, which I personally loved, of course. The great fashion continued into after parties as well, especially the Vanity Fair after party.  And it wasn't just the ladies either ― the men had some great, unique outfits that I enjoyed. But the ladies still stole most of the show for me. Here are my favorite Oscars looks from this year:

When I first saw Awkwafina's outfit, it automatically reminded me of Lizzie McGuire's outfit from The Lizzie McGuire Movie when she's singing in the Colosseum because it's got the flare and the sparkle. Wearing all one color/all one texture, especially when it's a metallic color could make you look like a penny or some other coin, but she nails it with this suit. The scarf is more sheer but still has some sheen to tone it down, adding a bit of contrast to the outfit. This is how you stand out in monochrome.

Normally, I would not like the gigantic puffy sleeves and would think they're too much, but they actually aren't in this case, and Rowan pulls this dress off really well. The sleeves actually add great shape and texture to the dress and don't bury her face or her at all. (It probably helps that Rowan's sporting a short hairdo now). This dress actually gives me Lily James Cinderella vibes with the pale blue, the tulle, and the floral embellishments all over. It has such pretty detailing, and the sequin florals give it a nice little sparkle.

I just love Gemma Chan's style. (You probably know that if you've frequented my blog in the past few months as I featured her in my latest Style Icons post.) When I saw her in this dress, I literally thought 'OH MY GEMMA CHAN' because I was in awe. I know her dress looks big and poofy in a non-ballgown type of way, which is honestly hard to pull off and something I didn't think I'd like, but she just rocks this hot pink dress.

Honestly, what's not for me to love about Gemma Chan wearing a hot pink dress? She's one of my favorite celebrities, and hot pink is my favorite color. And the best part is that it has pockets! I mean, pockets are a great way to take advantage of all that space the big train and fabric allows, and dresses with pockets are the best. Plus, she had cookies in her pocket! Like, this is why I love Gemma Chan. Anyway, back to the outfit, I love the ruffles, especially the ones at the neckline. They frame her face really well and add a fun flair to the top of the dress since the back and the rest of it are so dramatic.

My Favorite Pop Culture Galentines and Valentines

Happy belated Galentine's Day, and happy Valentine's Day! In honor of the lovely holiday, I'm sharing some of my favorite female friendships and romantic couples from some of my favorite books, movies, and TV shows. A lot of people often think of Valentine's Day as a day for couples, but I want this post to serve as a reminder that this day is simply about love. It doesn't matter if you're single, in a relationship, married, or engaged. Celebrate the day with people you love, whether it be friends, family, or significant others.

Lara Jean and Chris (To All the Boys I've Loved Before)

As the self-proclaimed Filipino Lara Jean Covey, there was no way I could leave my favorite fictional character to ever exist off this blog post. Whether you've read the book or have only seen the movie (if you haven't at least seen the movie, please do ― this is probably like the fifth time I've mentioned TATBILB on my blog), you'll know Lara Jean doesn't have very many friends, but she does have Chris, who's her best friend. (And if you haven't read or watched TATBILB, Chris is short for Christine.) The two of them have been friends since they were kids, but now that they're older and have developed different interests and whatnot, they don't spend as much time together. But that doesn't stop them from being best friends and being there for each other.

As someone who also doesn't have a lot of friends and doesn't spend a lot of time with the ones I do have, I really appreciate and admire their friendship. Lara Jean and Chris don't hang out as much as they used to because of school, different interests, and just different lives (we all know life's much easier when you're 7). But when Lara Jean needs Chris, Chris is there. Chris even goes on the ski trip for Lara Jean ― and Chris doesn't do school functions (or school)! 

For me, pretty much all of my friends live in different states, thousands of miles away. So I don't get to see them very often. But if and when I need them (and when they need me), we're there for each other.

My January Favorites

January certainly felt like a long month to start the year off, but right now it's a new year celebration for those who celebrate the lunar new year. Happy Lunar New Year to those who celebrate! Anyway, back to the long month of January. The -40 degree weather certainly made it seem longer and definitely contributed to what I loved last month. From keeping me warm to taking care of my skin, several things caught my attention last month.

My Oh My Supply Co's THE SNUGGLY DUCKLING x DREAMERS DESTINATIONS Unisex Crewneck - Pink

I got this for Christmas and actually featured it in my What I Got For Christmas 2019 post, so it may look familiar. I wore this a lot last month. It's super soft inside and definitely comfy. I can even wear another shirt underneath it if it's extra cold (which it was last week in the Midwest). I love the color, and I love Tangled, so it's a sweet, subtle way of showing my love for the Disney princess movie. My Oh My Supply Co actually has lots of variations of this design  for other Disney movies, like the Cave of Wonders and Agrabah for Aladdin, so if you love Disney, you should definitely check it out! My December Favorites

Before we get too deep into the new year, I wanted to share my last monthly favorites post of 2018. December was a great month as I got to spend a lot of time with my family, and I also just love Christmas and the holidays. Last month, I tried new recipes and food, watched new movies, and bought new things that I adore.

Disney "Being a princess is exhausting" pajamas

I found this super cute pajama set at the Disney Store at the outlet mall on a clearance rack for only $18 and instantly loved them. I've always been a fan of Disney princesses, but my love for Disney ― especially the princesses ― has grown within the past year. At first, I was upset because the only size left was extra small, and I haven't worn an extra small anything since middle school probably. However, when I took it off the rack and got a better look at it, I realized it was a big extra small and would totally fit me.

I love the light pink color as it goes great with the gray princess print and text and the gold accents. I love the sketches of the princesses everywhere and like how they all have different expressions. I do wish they included more of the princesses, but that's alright. These pajamas are super comfy and I even like to wear the pajama top when I'm not sleeping.

My November Favorites

November was a pretty eventful month as I saw new musical productions, tried new restaurants, heard new music, and read new books. I even put together a lot of new outfits with some new clothes, which was evident in my November OOTD post titled "New November". So I had some favorites from all over the place last month.

If you saw my October Shopping Roundup or November OOTD post, this jacket should be familiar. I won't say too much about this since it's already been in two of my blog posts, but this has easily become one of my favorite coats. Also, I always feel the need to mention how it reminds me of Regina George's jacket.

My October Favorites

Last month was pretty eventful for me since it was my birthday month, I went to see Hamilton, and I went on a road trip with my family. However, I still had a hard time picking things for this monthly favorites post, which is why this is coming over halfway into the next month. Basically, I tried a lot of new, good food in October and got a new top that I love.

Silver Lining Creamery is definitely my favorite food place my family and I tried in South Dakota during out fall road trip. It's in downtown Rapid City, which isn't too far from Mount Rushmore. If you ever go to Mount Rushmore, you're probably going to end up in Rapid City to eat at some point anyway, so this is definitely a must-go even if it isn't summertime. (When we first got to South Dakota, it was freezing with snow on the ground and everything. But it warmed up after a day or so, and then I didn't even need a jacket anymore.)

My September Favorites

When I first began thinking of what to include for this post, I only had two things on my list. Then I found one more to include but still felt like it wasn't enough. Two things didn't feel like enough content for a post, and it all related to one person, so it was kind of weird. Plus I didn't want to leave it at that. Eventually I found something else to include to diversify it a bit, which is partially why this post is happening so late into the next month. The first few weeks of October have been pretty busy, so although this installment of my monthly favorites series is still a short one, it's a great one for anyone who likes dance or performing arts or even just art in general.

Michael Dameski's routine to "Madness" by Ruelle on World of Dance

If you've seen any of my monthly favorites post from this past summer, you know I love Michael Dameski and his dancing, so it really should come as no surprise more of his dances are in the latest installment of my monthly favorites.

What I loved about this dance was that it was different and much more theatrical and dramatic than the preceding ones. The ninja concept was awesome and wasn't overplayed or too gimmicky. Dameski literally put on a show with this routine by taking advantage of everything he could, from the costume to the graphics and the video board to the lighting effects. His performance was amazing here, and I don't know what you were watching if you didn't believe he was an actual mad ninja in this dance.

Those are two of the most iconic lines from Tina Fey's 2004 film Mean Girls. And since today is Wednesday, October 3rd, it's the ultimate Mean Girls Day!

The movie may be 14 years old now, but its popularity has only grown since. Now with Mean Girls on Broadway, there are more ways to watch and celebrate the iconic piece of pop culture. Old school things often come back as trends decades after the height of their popularity, like vinyls and record players and instant cameras. One of the coolest Mean Girls Broadway merchandise items is the cast recording on vinyl. Not only is it retro, but it looks fabulous because the vinyl itself is pink! I would definitely buy a record player just so I could get this vinyl and listen to it.

Fashion Friday: 2018 Emmys Red Carpet Favorites

Quite some time has passed since I've done a Fashion Friday post, but it's back! After seeing a bunch of great looks from the Emmys last weekend, I've decided to share my favorites from the red (I know it wasn't red, but whatever) carpet. I especially enjoyed putting together this Fashion Friday not only because it's been a little while since my last one, but because I included and looked at outfits from celebrities I'm not too familiar with, so it was interesting to learn about and see other celebrities' looks and tastes.

No white after Labor Day? Jessica Biel doesn't care about that outdated rule (and neither do I). The semicircles angled all over combined with the ruffles create such a fun texture and look. The white color keeps it nice and clean, but the design is so unique and stands out.
